The Horror of Apathy

The bystander effect scares me more than death itself. The thought of dying or needing aid while surrounded by uncaring people is a compilation of all my fear and anxiety about humans. I have started to write a new short horror story with it as part of the plot and have been unable to get the concept out of my head for weeks. So when I looked at the news and saw a story out of the UK about a man about to jump to his death while onlookers yelled “Jump” my heart sank. A man who needed help and support more than any other time in his life….and they filmed it and encouraged him to jump. So he jumped, he ended his life while other filmed it on phones for entertainment. Apathy is modern day horror.

  1. it truly is as you say–apathy is a true to life horror, and all of us should be afraid of it. how did this come to be, and when did it become the norm? i always heard as a a child that when you needed it most, you would be helped by the hand of strangers. but this is no so true these days.
